Gautam Gambhir, Surya Kumar Yadav’s Knocks Help KKR Inflict 7-Wicket Defeat on Mumbai Indians in Opener

April 09 08:58 2015

kkr2New Delhi, Thursday, April 9 – Rohit Sharma and Corey Anderson partnership helped Mumbai Indians put a total of 168 runs on the scoreboard. The duo’s stand made the men in blue shirts gain foothold after quick dismissals in the early overs.

Gautam Gambhir, the skipper of Kolkata Knight Riders, won the toss and elected to field first. The decision turned absolutely right when first MI wicket fell in the form of Aaron Finch at the score 8. Finch succumbed to Morne Morkel when a brilliant catch by Umesh Yadav made him go back to the pavilion post contributing 5 runs. The first shock was huge for Mumbai Indians but fumbling under pressure is expected, particularly when not playing in front of the home crowd.

KKR kept on getting the loudest cheer from fans since the opener was slated at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Taking the advantage of playing at familiar conditions, Kolkata Knight Riders increased the pace of bowling attack that made wicketkeeper batsman Aditya Tare to fell short to Shakib Al Hasan. Umesh Yadav once again managed to come under the ball and let his teammates jump in sheer joy. MI continued to get shocks as Ambati Rayudu was out for a duck. Yusuf Pathan took an easy catch in the slips. But it was the last moment for Kolkata Knight Riders to share happiness as the opener Rohit Sharma and Corey Anderson hold the fort to take MI’s total score as higher as possible.

This wasn’t easy at all for the reason that defending champions had a complete grip on the match. However, closing the eyes to brilliant 98-run knock of Mumbai Indians skipper isn’t possible in view of the fact that he exhibited a beautiful play for which he is famous across the world. Rohit is the man who can keep on adding runs from one end and the same was apparent a day ago as well. Andre Russell dropped Sharma’s catch, giving him a lifeline. The catch was a sitter at square leg, almost needing huge focus what Russell failed to pour.

Exploiting the opportunity, Rohit with Anderson contributed several runs. Despite the fact that he fell short of 2 runs to pocket a ton, 12 fours and 4 huge sixes were adequate to tell his class. With 3 biggies and 4 boundaries, Corey – the hard hitter of the ball – scored 55 runs in just 41 balls. After 20 overs, a fighting total of 168 was set for KKR to chase. Morne Morkel with two wickets was the leading wicket taker. Shakib sent one man back to the pavilion.

Chasing the target turned slightly difficult when the opener Robin Uthappa was dismissed by Anderson in the third over. The Kolkata Knight Riders’ wicketkeeper scored a 9 of 12 balls (4 x 0; 6 x 1). But Gautam Gambhir was in another mood. He did not let the MI bowlers to build pressure on him. The 33-year-old Delhi born player accumulated 57 runs in 43 balls, including 7 classy boundaries and a six. Manish Pandey also lent a hand to his team to smell victory. The right-handed batsman was impressive given that he struck 2 fours & 3 sixes and took singles to score 40 of 24 balls. Harbhajan Singh earned his wicket, letting Mumbai Indians heave a sigh of relief at least for some time. But game was almost over for them when Suryakumar Yadav headed towards  the crease. He powered defending champions to 7-wicket win.

His thunder at the jam-packed stadium in Kolkata stole the show thanks to contribution of 46 runs in 20 balls. In between, Jasprit Bumrah ended the stint of Gambhir. However, it was almost next to impossible to bounce back in the game particularly when Yusuf Pathan arrived at the 22 yards pitch. His short but striking knock of 14 runs in 12 balls comprised a six and four. As soon as the winning shot was hit, supporters carried on applauding. Shah Rukh Khan, one of the owners of KKR, kept the crowd on its feet. His son AbRam won hundreds of thousands of hearts with his cute activities in the ground.

Kolkata Knight Riders began Indian Premier League 2015 with a victory and inflicted a humiliating defeat on Mumbai Indians, making Rohit’s innings go in vain. In today’s match, Chennai Super Kings will take on Delhi Daredevils. Audience is curious to see whether DD get a desired start or let the rivals get grip. Match is to start at 8 p.m.
