April 10 08:46 2015

csk3New Delhi, Friday, April 10 – The enthusiastic crowd as MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, continued to give loudest cheer to Chennai Super Kings the moment the openers arrived on the crease to bat first after Delhi Daredevils decided to field first post winning the toss.

CSK who had been red hot in the previous seasons of Indian Premier League had a wobbly start a day ago against the DD given that destructive hitter of the ball Brendon McCullum was sent back to the pavilion by Nathan Coulter-Nile at a score of 4.  Yuvraj Singh made no mistake to start his stint in team Delhi with a good catch. Suresh Raina arrived on the crease to stabilize the shaky innings of the men in yellow caps, however, succumbed to the same man after adding 4 runs in the team. The new batsman Faf du Plessis gave much needed support to the opener Dwayne Smith at a right time since the pressure of scoring runs at pace was building more and more. Speed certainly increased given that the duo sent the ball into the fences on weak deliveries.

The right-handed batsman Smith was dismissed by Imran Tahir and pocketed 34 runs of 31 balls, including six boundaries. du Plessis was next man to depart but he certainly gave his team a push. His 32 runs of 24 balls comprised three fours. At a score of 100, 4 men were back in the dressing room. The stress of accumulating was going to shift to the middle-order batsmen. Ravindra Jadeja lost his wicket in this rush and played 17-run knock off 18 balls (4 x 1 & 6 x 1). Dwayne Bravo faltered and only scored a 1. The reason to smile seemed to get never ending for the DD as Domnic Joseph gave his teammates another chance to jump in joy.

CSK skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was in a different mood. He ensured he stand rock solid against the bowling attack of Delhi Daredevils till the end and certainly, his innings brought the entire difference in the match consequence.  With Ravichandran Ashwin (not out at 12 runs; 4 x 1) on the other side, Dhoni hit marvelous sixes. Words are less to define the beauty of his helicopter shot, which defy several concepts, movement of wrist and body. Facing 27 balls, he scored 30 runs. The frustration of not hitting the biggies was clear on Dhoni’s face when he came to bat but soon he did what was running in his mind.

His short but impressive knock comprised a boundary as well. In an attempt to strike a long shot, Dhoni lost his wicket to Nathan Coulter-Nile. Mayank Agarwal, without doubt gave Chennai Super Kings’ fan a shocker by a taking his catch. Mohit Sharma ensured he gathers runs on the last ball of the first innings and he ran for a couple of runs, which at the end let DD to lose the match by just 1 run. After 20 overs, 150 runs were put on the scoreboard that was surely an easy chase for the rivals thanks to big names in the ‘playing XI’.

Chidhambaram Gautam and Agarwal came to open DD innings in their first match of IPL season 8. Ashish Nehra was given the ball and he proved confidence of his captain right by dismissing Delhi Daredevils’ wicketkeeper at 4. In the same over, he made the opener to go back and practice much on fast bowling. The 24-year-old batsman left an impression in the mind of views via two fours and a six. Albie Morkel, whose 73-run innings went into vain, won hundreds of thousands of hearts. The only disappointment for Delhi supporters was the all-rounder not getting any good partnership from top, middle and lower order batsmen. Shreyas Iyer, Kedar Jadhav, Yuvraj Singh, DD captain JP Duminy, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Amit Mishra and Imran Tahir were out at the scores of 7, 20, 9, 5, 5, 4 and 2, respectively.

Domnic Joseph came to bat but Morkel ensured he remains at the striking end in the final over. DD appeared winning the match when 6 runs were needed to win the match on the last ball. Morkel struck the ball hard but it went for a boundary, making Delhi boys lose the match by 1 run. Despite not being on the winning side against the CSK, the left-handed batsman Morkel gave opponents a clear signal not to consider his potential any less. This match will be remembered for his heroic 73 runs, which included eight 4s and 1 six, a brilliant catch by Faf du Plessis, some great fielding and good bowling by Ashish Nehra. In today’s match at Maharashtra Cricket Association Cricket Stadium, Pune, Kings XI Punjab will take on Rajasthan Royals.
